A little penance

From the Catechism
1430
Jesus' call to conversion and penance, like that of the prophets before him, does not aim first at outward works, "sackcloth and ashes," fasting and mortification, but at the conversion of the heart, interior conversion. Without this, such penances remain sterile and false; however, interior conversion urges expression in visible signs, gestures and works of penance.

a little metaphysics

God is the Supreme Being, creator of all beings.
The creature receives its being from God.

The being of the creature is a participation in the Being of God, but it is also distinct from the Supreme Being.

St. Thomas Aquinas

The light of natural reason, whereby we discern what is good and what is evil, which is the function of the natural law, is nothing else than an imprint on us of the divine light. It is therefore evident that the natural law is nothing else that the rational creature's participation of the eternal law.

Why Celibacy?

1 Corinthians 7:32-35
Brothers and sisters:I should like you to be free of anxieties. An unmarried man is anxious about the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord. But a married man is anxious about the things of the world, how he may please his wife, and he is divided. An unmarried woman or a virgin is anxious about the things of the Lord,so that she may be holy in both body and spirit.A married woman, on the other hand,is anxious about the things of the world, how she may please her husband. I am telling you this for your own benefit, not to impose a restraint upon you,but for the sake of proprietyand adherence to the Lord without distraction.

Day of Prayer

Do not forget that today is the 36th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade.
Every day more than 4000 babies are destroyed in the womb.
Say yes to life.
1. Help a mother to be who is in need.
2. Practice chastity and teach young people to practice chastity
3. Pray and fast for an end to abortion.

Inauguration Day

Today we have a new president. On the one hand I am very worried about his view of the world and religion. On the other hand the greatness of America has always come from its people and their love for liberty. Our Founding Fathers sought to limit the power of the government. People need to love liberty and take responsibility for their own lives.

In regard to religion: Can anyone remember the religious views of Eisenhower or Hoover or Wilson? thankfully we do not look to politicians for religious leadership. Politicians are always bound be expediency and survival.

America has never been too friendly to Catholics. Antagonism towards Catholicism is nothing new, so I am not too worried about it. We strive to make this world a better place, but our true home is in heaven.

I am at my sister's house enjoying a few days with her, her husband and two kids. Henry turned 2 on Christmas day and April is 8 months old. They are fun to play with.
The ski trip was good. I am no good at skiing, but enjoyed being in the mountains and the snow. The ranch where we stayed was great. No tv's in the rooms, no cell phone coverage. The kids had to socialize with each other.
